MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis advanced to the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals as they defeated No. 6-seed Huntington (Ind.) 7-2 on Tuesday during Quarterfinal action at Sutter Tennis Center.
Indiana Wesleyan has won nine matches in a row to improve to 9-2 during the fall season. No. 3-seed Indiana Wesleyan will battle No. 2-seed Goshen (Ind.) on Thursday in the semifinal contest.
The Wildcats took a 2-1 advantage following the completion of doubles play. Tyler Abbott (FR/Atlanta, Ga.) and Joel Montgomery (SO/Powell, Ohio) won 8-2 in the No. 2 contest while Gavin White (JR/Lakeland, Fla.) and Austin Christner (SO/Goshen, Ind.) earned an 8-0 victory at No. 3-doubles. In the match pitting top teams, Brandon Dubuque (SR/Marion, Ind.) and Leonard Mathews (SR/Merrillville, Ind.) lost 8-4.
Indiana Wesleyan won five of the six singles matches to clinch the 7-2 team victory. Dubuque pulled out a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1-singles and Mathews won 6-4, 6-2 in the third position. Montgomery won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4-singles, Abbott was victorious 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5-singles, and Christner cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6-singles. White lost the only singles match for IWU with a tight 7-5, 7-5 decision at No. 2-singles.
The Crossroads League Semifinals will feature No. 3-seed Indiana Wesleyan at No. 2-seed Goshen on Thursday. Goshen defeated Indiana Wesleyan 5-4 on September 5 in the Wildcats’ second match of the season.
