MARION, Ind. -- On an extremely windy afternoon the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis team defeated visiting Georgetown (Ky.) by a 7-2 margin on Friday at the Sutter Tennis Center.
“It was awful condition today with the wind,” said Wildcat head coach Eddy Shigley. “It was a test of perseverance. We had two opponents today -- Georgetown and the wind.”
Indiana Wesleyan opened the contest with wins in two of the three doubles matches. Katie Wilson (SR/Middletown, Ind.) and Lucia Solis (FR/Tucuman, Argentina) won 8-2 at No. 1-doubles while Rachel Bottorff (JR/Newburgh, Ind.) and Alex Mella (FR/Libertyville, Ill.) earned an 8-4 victory at No. 2-doubles. The No. 3-team of Kelsey Vessels (JR/Roanoke, Ind.) and Ellen Hornett (JR/Fishers, Ind.) lost a closely contested match by a 9-7 score.
The Wildcats won the top three matches in singles. Solis won 6-0, 6-2 in the top match, Wilson won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2-singles, and Bottorff earned a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 3-singles. Mella retired at No. 4-singles during the second set with the score 6-4, 1-4. Mikayla Marazzi (JR/Abbotsford, BC) finished off a 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 win at No. 5-singles and Marissa Klein (FR/Evansville, Ind) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan begins the Crossroads League Tournament on Tuesday.
