Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Coinciding with the five match win streak for the Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer team has been some stellar defensive play.
Indiana Wesleyan earned another shutout Saturday night as they defeated visiting Goshen (Ind.) 3-0 at Wildcat Field. The win moves Indiana Wesleyan to 9-4-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the Crossroads League.
The Wildcats have shutout four consecutive opponents which is the first time they have accomplished that feat since 2008. The Wildcats have not allowed a goal in 419 minutes 6 seconds. Tonight, the defense allowed just five shots and keeper Josh Goepper (SR/Shelby Township, Mich.)s made four saves to preserve the shutout.
“The main catalyst has been shutouts and not getting scored on,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Luke Sanford. “We feel confident in our defending. Kyle Beimers (SR/Grand Rapids, Mich.) moving back has been a big part of that and Josh Goeppers has been fantastic.”
During the five match win streak the Wildcats have outscored opponents 15-1. During the streak the Wildcats have received production from across the board and that trend continued Saturday with three different Wildcats getting in the scoring column.
Samuel Conti (FR/Fredonia, NY) took a corner kick in the 16th minute that Keaton Albert (SR/Park City, Ill.) put in the net for the eventual game-winning goal. Then late in the first half after an attack and a cleared ball, Caleb Denlinger (JR/Miamisburg, Ohio) gained possession and hit a shot 20 yards out that put the Wildcats up 2-0 in the 43rd minute.
“In league games against teams you know the set pieces become more and more crucial. So we talked about wanting to score off a set piece and the boys did that tonight on the first goal,” said Sanford. “Then Caleb Denlinger keeps coming in and giving us a spark. He scored a fantastic goal tonight. A great strike.”
Corey Lopez (SR/Warsaw, Ind.) added the only goal in the second half off an assist from Evan Young (JR/Colorado Springs, Colo.). The goal came in the 61st minute.
“We have talked about taking chances and I feel we did that well tonight,” continued Sanford. “We feel fortunate to come out with a 3-0 win. I felt Goshen was a very good side. But I feel we took our chances well and Goshen played a really good game so we feel very good about the result.”
Indiana Wesleyan takes to the road for their next match which will be Wednesday at Saint Francis (Ind.). Kickoff is schedule for 7 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
