MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis team wrapped up the 2015 Crossroads League Regular Season Championship on Thursday with a 9-0 victory at home against Huntington (Ind.).
The league championship is the 23rd for the women’s tennis program. Indiana Wesleyan won every league championship between 1992 to 2013 before that streak ended last year to Marian (Ind.). IWU went on to win the Crossroads League Tournament championship in 2014.
The Wildcats are 11-0 overall during the fall schedule and complete Crossroads League play at 8-0. The Foresters drop to 9-2 this season and end the league schedule at 6-2 for a third place finish.
“Huntington is a very good team and they gave us all we could handle in doubles today,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Eddy Shigley. “Our girls came out very focused in our singles play and consequently played excellent singles.”
Doubles play opened the afternoon and featured some competitive matches. Katie Wilson (SR/Middletown, Ind.) and Lucia Solis (FR/Tucuman, Argentina) won 9-8 (7-1) at No. 1-doubles and Rachel Bottorff (JR/Newburgh, Ind.) and Alex Mella (FR/Libertyville, Ill.) won 8-3 at No. 2-doubles. The No. 3-doubles match saw Kelsey Vessels (JR/Roanoke, Ind.) and Ellen Hornett (JR/Fishers, Ind.) win 9-7.
Singles matches were not as close as doubles as Indiana Wesleyan won in straight sets in each of the six contests. Bottorff won 6-3, 6-0 in the top position while Solis earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2-singles. Wilson won 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 position and Mikayla Marazzi (JR/Abbotsford, BC) cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory in No. 4-singles. Marissa Klein (FR/Evansville, Ind) pulled off a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 and Vessels collected a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan ends the fall regular season on Friday with a 2 p.m. home match against Georgetown (Ky.) at Sutter Tennis Center.
