HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis finished Crossroads League play today with an 8-1 victory on the road at Huntington (Ind.) in Huntington, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan finishes Crossroads League play with a 6-2 record which is good for third place. Marian (Ind.) won the league title at 8-0 and Goshen (Ind.) took runner-up at 7-1. Those two teams both beat Indiana Wesleyan by 5-4 scores in the first two matches of the season. Since those matches Indiana Wesleyan has won seven straight for a 7-2 overall record.
On Thursday, the Wildcats gained an early lead over the Foresters with two wins in doubles matches. Tyler Abbott (FR/Atlanta, Ga.) and Daniel Smith (SR/Crown Point, Ind.) won 8-6 at No. 2-doubles while Austin Christner (SO/Goshen, Ind.) and Andrew Block (FR/Fishers, Ind.) won 8-0 at No. 3-doubles. Leonard Mathews (SR/Merrillville, Ind.) and Gavin White (JR/Lakeland, Fla.) fell 8-6 in No. 1 play.
The Wildcats ended the match with a dominant performance in singles. Mathews won 6-2, 6-4 in the top spot and White earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2-singles. Abbott left with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 and Joel Montgomery (SO/Powell, Ohio) earned the point at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Christner easily won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 and Caleb Cottrell (SO/Hudsonville, Mich.) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan plays again on Friday as they host Georgetown (Ky.) at 2 p.m. at Sutter Tennis Center.
