Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. -- With the score tied and 12 minutes remaining in the game the No. 6-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball team finished the game on a 28-14 run to defeat host Goshen (Ind.) 67-53.
Katrina Blackmon (SR/Marion, Ind.) broke a 39-39 tie with a traditional 3-point play with 12:22 remaining in the game to ignite a 12-0 run. Indiana Wesleyan led 51-39 with 9 minutes remaining and was not threatened the rest of the way. The lead grew to 18 points at 63-45 for the largest margin of the night.
Blackmon and Emma Stahl (SR/Elkhart, Ind.) keyed the Crossroads League victory tonight. Blackmon had game-highs of 18 points and 12 rebounds while Stahl contributed 16 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 6 steals. The pair of seniors combined for 27 points in the second half.
Indiana Wesleyan shot 39.7-percent (23 of 58) from the floor and 27.3-percent (3 of 11) from beyond the arc. Carlee Cottrell (JR/West Bloomfield, Mich.) was the third Wildcat in double figures with 10 points and she was 2-of-5 from 3-point range.
Defensively, Indiana Wesleyan limited Goshen to 33.3-percent (18 of 54) shooting. Goshen committed 22 turnovers and hit on only 21.4-percent (3 of 14) of their 3-point attempts.
It was all Goshen early in the game as they scored the first nine points. Indiana Wesleyan responded with the next eight points but did not gain their first lead of the night until a Chelsea Winner (SO/Maria Stein, Ohio) bucket with 6:48 left in the half gave them a 16-15 lead. The two teams went into halftime tied at 24-24.
The first seven and a half minutes of the second half saw three ties and no lead greater than five points. The third and final tie of the half was 39-39 that started the 28-14 IWU run to close out the game.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 18-3 this season and 9-0 in the Crossroads League while Goshen, who is receiving votes in the latest national poll, falls to 14-7 and 5-4 in league play. Tonight’s games completed the first round of play in the Crossroads League and Indiana Wesleyan has built a three game lead as the next best team is 6-3.
Indiana Wesleyan remains on the road this Saturday as they travel north to Bethel in Mishawaka, Indiana. Game time is at 1 p.m.
