MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis dismantled Spring Arbor (Mich.) by a 9-0 score this afternoon at the Sutter Tennis Center in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals.
No. 2-seed Indiana Wesleyan will now play No. 3-seed Grace (Ind.) on Thursday in the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals. Grace defeated No. 6-seed Taylor by an 8-1 margin today.
The Wildcats had little trouble in sweeping Spring Arbor today and it began with doubles play. The Wildcats earned an 8-4 win at No. 1-doubles from the tandem of Kyle Johnson (SR/East Moline, Ill.) and Brandon Dubuque (JR/Marion, Ind.). Gavin White (SO/Lakeland, Fla.) and Leonard Mathews (JR/Merrillville, Ind.) won 8-0 at No. 2 and Adam Wroughton (SR/Schereville, Ind.) and Joel Montgomery (FR/Powell, Ohio) earned an 8-1 win at No. 3 play.
Indiana Wesleyan was even more dominant in singles as no Spring Arbor player won more than two games in any of the sets. Johnson won 6-2, 6-1 from the top position and White won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2-singles. Mathews claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 play and Montgomery won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4-singles. Dubuque won the point 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and Austin Christner (FR/Goshen, Ind.) took a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan and Grace will now play in the league semifinals on Thursday for the right to play in the league championship. The winner of the league tournament will earn an automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament in May in Mobile, Alabama.
