MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis met little resistance today against visiting Saint Francis (Ind.) in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals. IWU won 9-0 to advance to the semifinals on Thursday.
No. 2-seed Indiana Wesleyan quickly dispatched No. 7-seed Saint Francis with just 13 games lost in the match. The victory moves Indiana Wesleyan into the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals where they will host No. 3-seed Spring Arbor (Mich.). SAU defeated No. 6-seed Huntington (Ind.) by a 5-4 score today.
The Wildcats dropped just one game in doubles play and that came in an 8-1 victory by Katie Wilson (JR/Middletown, Ind.) and Kim Mella (SR/Libertyville, Ill.) in No. 1-doubles. The No. 2 team of Rachel Bottorff (SO/Newburgh, Ind.) and Kelsey Vessels (SO/Roanoke, Ind.) plus the No. 3 team of Ellen Hornett (SO/Fishers, Ind.) and Diane Jones (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) both won their contests by 8-0 scores.
Indiana Wesleyan kept rolling in singles play with all six matches being straight set victories. Katie Wilson won 6-3, 6-0 from the top position while Bottorff cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2-singles. Mella won 6-1, 6-2 at the third spot and Vessels easily won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 play. Courtney Siepman (JR/Plainfield, Ind.) took the point with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5-singles and Mikayla Marazzi (SO/Abbotsford, BC) won 6-0, 6-2 in the sixth position.
Indiana Wesleyan (12-1) and Spring Arbor will battle on Thursday in the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals. The winner advances to the league tournament championship match on Saturday. Indiana Wesleyan defeated Spring Arbor 8-1 in the first meeting of the season on September 16.
