MARION, Ind. -- When the Crossroads League Men’s Tennis Tournament begins next week Indiana Wesleyan University will be the No. 2-seed in the bracket.
Indiana Wesleyan defeated visiting Huntington (Ind.) 5-4 today to wrap up second place in the Crossroads League regular season schedule with a 7-1 mark. IWU lost the first match of the season to Marian (Ind.) which claimed the league title with an 8-0 mark.
The Crossroads League Tournament begins on Tuesday. Indiana Wesleyan will play the No. 7 seed in the tournament.
The Wildcats opened the match vs. Huntington with two wins in doubles play. Gavin White (SO/Lakeland, Fla.) and Leonard Mathews (JR/Merrillville, Ind.) won 8-4 in No. 2-doubles and the No. 3 team of Joel Montgomery (FR/Powell, Ohio) and Adam Wroughton (SR/Schereville, Ind.) won 8-2. The No. 1 team of Kyle Johnson (SR/East Moline, Ill.) and Brandon Dubuque (JR/Marion, Ind.) were defeated 9-7.
Indiana Wesleyan (7-2, 7-1 CL) and Huntington (4-8, 4-4 CL) split the six singles matches for the 5-4 IWU victory. Mathews won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3-singles, Montgomery claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5-singles, and Austin Christner (FR/Goshen, Ind.) took a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6-singles. Johnson fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the top match and White lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 play. Dubuque retired as Huntington won No. 4-singles 2-6, 5-2, retire.
IWU next plays at 4 p.m. on Friday with a home match versus IU-East at the Sutter Tennis Center.
