SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis team claimed an 8-1 victory Tuesday afternoon at Spring Arbor.
With the win the Wildcats improve to 7-1 this fall and 4-1 in the Crossroads League. The Cougars drop to 5-2 this year, with all eight matches coming in league competition.
Indiana Wesleyan earned wins in all three doubles matches for the early 3-0 advantage. The top team of Katie Wilson (JR/Middletown, Ind.) and Kim Mella (SR/Libertyville, Ill.) were victorious 8-2 while Kelsey Vessels (SO/Roanoke, Ind.) and Rachel Bottorff (SO/Newburgh, Ind.) won 8-1 in the No. 2 spot. Diane Jones (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) and Courtney Siepman (JR/Plainfield, Ind.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win in the third spot.
The Wildcats then won five of six singles matches for the 8-1 team victory. Four of the matches were decided in straight set.
Wilson won 6-3, 6-0 from the No. 1 position and Bottorff crushed her opponent at No. 2 by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Siepman won the point at No. 3-singles with a 6-0, 7-5 outcome and Vessels won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4-singles. Mella took the No. 5-singles point with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 win while Mikayla Marazzi (SO/Abbotsford, BC) lost 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 in No. 6-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan will now travel to Huntington (Ind.) for their next match which is at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
