GOSHEN, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis team blew away the competition en route to a 9-0 victory over Goshen (Ind.) on Saturday afternoon in Goshen, Indiana.
The Wildcats dropped just 10 games the entire day en route to the first Crossroads League victory of the season. In the nine separate matches, the Wildcats did not allow the Maple Leafs a single game victory in four of them.
"Our girls were eager to play today and were very focused," said head coach Eddy Shigley. "Ten different girls got to play in the lineup and we lost a total of 10 games in nine matches."
Half of the shutouts came in doubles play as the No. 1 team of Katie Wilson (JR/Middletown, Ind.) and Kim Mella (SR/Libertyville, Ill.) plus the No. 3 team of Courtney Siepman (JR/Plainfield, Ind.) and Diane Jones (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) each won by 8-0 margins. Kelsey Vessels (SO/Roanoke, Ind.) and Rachel Bottorff (SO/Newburgh, Ind.) earned an 8-2 win in No. 2-doubles for the 3-0 lead heading into singles.
Two Wildcats did not drop a game in singles play as well. Bottorff at No. 2-singles and Morgan Smith (FR/Bremen, Ind.) at No. 3-singles each won their match by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Wilson earned a 6-3, 6-0 win at the top singles position and Gabby D’Aniello won by an identical 6-3, 6-0 score at No. 4-singles. Cortney Clark at No. 5-singles and Makenzie Estrem (FR/Greenwood, Ind.) at No. 6-singles each won by 6-1, 6-0 scores.
Indiana Wesleyan is 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in Crossroads League play. IWU returns to action at 2 p.m. on Tuesday with a home match against Bethel (Ind.) at the Sutter Tennis Center.
