MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University put a mark in the win column for the first time in 2014-15 with a 7-2 home victory over Goshen (Ind.) at the Sutter Tennis Center.
The Wildcats improve to 1-1 on the season with the victory. IWU also moves to 1-1 in Crossroads League play as they prepare for their next match at 2 p.m. on Tuesday against Bethel (Ind.) at home.
Indiana Wesleyan was able to secure all three points in the doubles portion of the match for a 3-0 advantage. The No. 1-doubles team of Kyle Johnson (SR/East Moline, Ill.) and Brandon Dubuque (JR/Marion, Ind.) plus the No. 3-doubles team of Joel Montgomery (FR/Powell, Ohio) and Adam Wroughton (SR/Schereville, Ind.) each won by 8-2 scores. The No. 2-doubles tandem of Gavin White (SO/Lakeland, Fla.) and Leonard Mathews (JR/Merrillville, Ind.) finished with an 8-6 victory.
The Wildcats proceeded to take four of six singles match for the 7-2 team victory.
Johnson won 2-6, 6-1, 10-4 in the top singles position and Mathews was victorious 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2. Joel Montgomery picked up a 6-1, 5-1 (retired) victory at No. 3-singles while Austin Christner (FR/Goshen, Ind.) took a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5-singles. Dubuque was defeated 2-6, 7-5 (retired) at No. 4-singles and Daniel Smith (JR/Crown Point, Ind.) lost 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6 play.
