MOBILE, Ala. -- Indiana Wesleyan University suffered a pair of defeats on Tuesday at the NCCAA National Championship in Mobile, Alabama.
Indiana Wesleyan lost 5-0 in the morning session to Shorter (Ga.) and the dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Dallas Baptist (Texas) during the afternoon session.
The national tournament is split into two four team pools with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the semifinals. Shorter and Dallas Baptist each went 2-0 today while Indiana Wesleyan and Northwestern (Minn.) are both 0-2. IWU and Northwestern have been eliminated from the national semifinals.
In the morning session versus Shorter, Indiana Wesleyan dropped three close matches in doubles to fall behind 3-0. Rachel Bottorff (FR/Newburgh, Ind.) and Rachael Heiniger (SR/Munster, Ind.) had the best chance to pull out a victory as they lost 9-7 in No. 2-doubles. Katie Wilson (SO/Middletown, Ind.) and Kim Mella (JR/Libertyville, Ill.) lost 8-4 in No. 1-doubles while Courtney Siepman (SO/Plainfield, Ind.) and Kelsey Vessels (FR/Roanoke, Ind.) fell 8-3 in No. 3-doubles.
The singles matches commenced with Shorter needing just two victories to clinch the team win. They got those at No. 3 and No. 4-singles. Heiniger lost 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 play while Mella was defeated 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot. The other four singles matches went unfinished since Shorter earned enough for the team victory. Wilson was leading her match 7-5, 0-1 when it was called.
In the final match on Tuesday Indiana Wesleyan captured the early advantage with two wins in doubles play. Bottorff and Heiniger pulled out an 8-5 victory in No. 2-doubles while Vessels and Siepman took an 8-4 win in No. 3-doubles. The No. 1 team of Mella and Wilson lost 9-7.
Indiana Wesleyan gained victories from Kristen Futrell (SR/Marion, Ind.) with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 5-singles and Siepman with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in No. 6. But the two victories was one short for the Wildcats.
Wilson lost 6-3, 6-3 in the top match, Heiniger dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 3-singles, and Mella suffered a 6-3, 6-0 defeat in No. 4-singles. The most competitive match was at No. 2-singles where Bottorff was beaten 7-6, 3-6, 10-7.
Indiana Wesleyan will play one more match in the NCCAA National Championship with third place in the pool on the line. Indiana Wesleyan and Northwestern will play at 10 a.m.
