MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis completed the Mark Richards Classic on Saturday with a pair of dominating performances.
Indiana Wesleyan defeated IU Southeast 9-0 in the morning session and finished with another 9-0 win against Aquinas (Mich.) in the afternoon session. In all, Indiana Wesleyan lost just a single set in the two matches.
In the first contest with IU Southeast, Indiana Wesleyan did not drop a set. Katie Wilson (SO/Middletown, Ind.) and Kim Mella (JR/Libertyville, Ill.) won 8-1 in the top doubles position, Rachel Bottorff (FR/Newburgh, Ind.) and Rachael Heiniger (SR/Munster, Ind.) won 8-2 in No. 2-doubles, and Sarah Richert (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) and Diane Jones (JR/Greenwood, Ind.) were victorious 8-4 in the No. 3 match.
Wilson went on to win 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1-singles and Bottorff claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory in No. 2 play. Heiniger won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 and Kristen Futrell (SR/Marion, Ind.) earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4. Courtney Siepman (SO/Plainfield, Ind.) won the point at No. 5-singles 6-4, 6-3 while Mikayla Marazzi (FR/Abbotsford, BC) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6.
The Wildcats continued their stellar play against Aquinas with another 9-0 vcitory.
Wilson and Mella teamed at No. 1-doubles to win 8-6 and Bottorff and Heiniger won 8-4 at No. 2-doubles. In the No. 3 match, Siepman and Courtney Vessels scratched out a 9-7 victory.
Wilson lost the only set of the day at No. 1-singles but stilled earned a three set victory with scores of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Bottorff won 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 play and Heiniger took the point at No. 3 with a 6-2, 7-6 win. Mella earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 4, Futrell won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5, and Siepman completed the sweep with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 23-2 for the season and 7-2 in spring. IWU completes the regular season on Wednesday with a match at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The match begins at 4 p.m.
