MARION, Ind. -- Spring season is here for Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis as they had their first match since fall at the Sutter Tennis Center vs. Grand Valley State (Mich.).
GVSU earned a 9-0 shutout of Indiana Wesleyan as the Wildcats fall to 16-1 this year and 0-1 in the spring. The top player for Indiana Weslyean, Katie Wilson, was out of the match due to illness, thus bumping each Wildcat up a spot in the lineup.
Rachael Heiniger (SR, Munster, Ind.) and Kim Mella (JR, Libertyville, Ill.) lost 8-4 in the top doubles match while Rachel Bottorff (FR, Newburgh, Ind.) and Kristen Futrell (SR, Marion, Ind.) fell 8-6 in the closest doubles contest. Makayla Marazzi and Courtney Siepman (SO, Plainfield, Ind.) lost 8-1 in the third and final doubles match.
Indiana Wesleyan did not win a set in singles as GVSU swept the six singles matches. Bottorff lost 6-3, 6-3 while Heiniger and Mella each lost by identical scores of 6-2, 6-3. Futrell dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision, Siepman was defeated 6-1, 6-1 and Marazzi lost 6-1, 6-1.
The Wildcats will return to action a week from today as they host Saint Francis (Ill.) at 1 p.m. at the Sutter Tennis Center.
