Box Score MARION, Ind. -- No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball held off a second half charge from Taylor (Ind.) on Wednesday night in Luckey Arena to escape with a 60-55 victory in the Battle of Grant County.
Taylor (10-17, 5-10 CL) went on a 20-7 run early in the second half to gain their first and only lead of the night at 39-38 with 10:49 to play in the game. But on the next Indiana Wesleyan possession senior guard Taylor Goshert scored to ignite a 9-0 run as IWU did not trail the rest of the game.
“When they took the lead and we came right back and took the lead back, I think that was a critical part of the game. I always say this game, no matter what year it is, doesn’t matter what the records are, is always going to be a five point game. And tonight it was just that.”
The Trojans cut the deficit back to four points at 47-43 but again the Wildcats retaliated with six unanswered points for a 53-43 lead and less than 6 minutes left to play.
Indiana Wesleyan (21-6, 11-4 CL) held on to the advantage but Taylor fought back with six straight points to make it a four point game again at 55-51 with 39 seconds on the clock. Taylor went into foul mode to finish the game and Goshert hit 5-of-6 free throws to secure the IWU victory.
“She really played her heart out,” Brooks said of Goshert. “She hit big shots and defensively she was on the board hard. When she plays like that it gives us a chance to have a game like this.”
Goshert played all 40 minutes and had a double-double with game-highs of 25 points and 10 rebounds. She finished 7-of-10 from the field and 10-of-11 from the charity stripe.
Katrina Blackmon was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 14 points in addition to 7 rebounds. Emma Stahl added nine points and five assists while Erika Isham came off the bench to contribute four points and four blocked shots. Carlee Cottrell also supplied some production off the bench with six points on 2-of-4 shooting from deep.
Indiana Wesleyan shot 39.6-percent (19 of 48) overall and 81.8-percent (18 of 22) from the foul line. IWU committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 15 Taylor miscues. Taylor was limited to 32.1-percent (17 of 53) shooting.
Indiana Wesleyan will remain at Luckey for their next game which will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday vs. Spring Arbor (Mich.).
