Box Score MARION, Ind. -- No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball outscored visiting Brescia (Ky.) by 32 points in the second half to win going away 89-54 on Tuesday night in the 2014-15 home opener at Luckey Arena.
The Wildcats led by just three points at halftime before surging for a 53-21 advantage during the second half. IWU shot 56.3-percent (18 of 32) during the half while holding Brescia to just 19.2-percent (5 of 26).
Indiana Wesleyan (2-0) held the three point lead at halftime in large part due to their bench play. The IWU bench contributed more than half the team’s points with a 21 point outburst. Erika Isham (SR/Tekonsha, Mich.) had nine points and Kelsey Key (SO/Anderson, Ind.) chipped in eight points during the opening half.
“We had a very one sided conversation at halftime,” said IWU head coach Steve Brooks. “The difference in the first half was when I subbed in our second group they played harder and moved the ball better. There were a lot of positives that happened when they were in.”
The Wildcats opened the second half with the first 11 points to build a 14 point lead at 47-33. The Bearcats never threatened again.
“I challenged those guys to come out in the first five minutes and they were either going to play hard or they weren’t going to play the rest of the game,” continued Brooks. “And it was a good effort in the second half from them from start to finish.”
A balanced Wildcat attack saw five players score double figures, led by Isham and Key off the bench with 13 points apiece. Katrina Blackmon (SR/Marion, Ind.) and Tori Kraft (JR/Harbor Beach, Mich.) each scored 11 points and Carlee Cottrell (JR/West Bloomfield, Mich.) finished with 10 points. The IWU bench outscored the entire Brescia team 56-54.
“Erika played very well even with all she has been through the past few weeks,” stated Brooks. “We got a really good effort out of Tori Kraft and we got a really good effort out of Kelsey Key. They were major contributors for us tonight.”
Indiana Wesleyan shot 50.8-percent (30 of 59) for the evening and held a 47-35 advantage on the boards. Brescia (1-2) was limited to 26.9-percent (14 of 52) shooting and turned the ball over 21 times. The two teams combined for 73 free throw attempts.
