MARION, Ind. -- No. 2-seed Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis has reached the Crossroads League Tournament championship match as they defeated No. 3-seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) by a 5-0 score today in the semifinals at the Sutter Tennis Center.
Indiana Wesleyan will get another shot at top-seed Marian (Ind.) in the league tournament championship match which will be held on Saturday in Indianapolis. Marian broke the Indiana Wesleyan fall win streak of 241 earlier this season in a 5-4 contest.
The Wildcats quickly gained a 3-0 advantage with a sweep in doubles. Katie Wilson (JR/Middletown, Ind.) and Kim Mella (SR/Libertyville, Ill.) won 8-5 from the No. 1-doubles position, Rachel Bottorff (SO/Newburgh, Ind.) and Kelsey Vessels (SO/Roanoke, Ind.) gained the point at No. 2 with an 8-0 win, and Diane Jones (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) and Ellen Hornett (SO/Fishers, Ind.) won 8-1 at No. 3-doubles.
Indiana Wesleyan won the first two completed singles matches to gain the fifth point necessary for the team victory. The other four matches were not completed. Mella won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4-singles and Vessels accounted for the other victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan and Marian battle Saturday in the Crossroads League Tournament championship with the winner earning the league’s automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament held in May in Mobile, Alabama.
