MARION, Ind. -- The No. 2-seed Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis team is one victory away from advancing to the NAIA National Championship following a 5-2 victory over No. 3-seed Grace (Ind.) on Thursday at the Sutter Tennis Center.
Indiana Wesleyan won the Crossroads League Tournament semifinal match and now plays at Marian (Ind.) on Saturday in the league tournament championship match. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Indianapolis as Marian is the No. 1-seed in the tournament.
Indiana Wesleyan won two of the three doubles matches for the early 2-1 advantage. Gavin White (SO/Lakeland, Fla.) and Leonard Mathews (JR/Merrillville, Ind.) won 9-7 from the second position while Adam Wroughton (SR/Schereville, Ind.) and Joel Montgomery (FR/Powell, Ohio) cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 3-doubles. Kyle Johnson (SR/East Moline, Ill.) and Brandon Dubuque (JR/Marion, Ind.) lost a close 9-7 decision from the top match.
The Wildcats then won three of the first four singles matches to claim the fifth and deciding point. The other two matches, Mathews at No. 3-singles and Austin Christner (FR/Goshen, Ind.) at No. 6-singles, were not completed. White won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2, Montgomery won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4, and Dubuque won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5-singles for the Wildcats. Johnson fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan and Marian will play for the right to represent the Crossroads League at the NAIA National Championship which will be held in May in Mobile, Alabama.
