Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Tyrone Martin (SR/Indianapolis, Ind.) scored twice and Keaton Albert (JR/Park City, Ill.) assisted on three goals as Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer routed visiting Huntington (Ind.) 5-0 on Saturday night at Wildcat Field.
“Keaton Albert, Tyrone Martin, and Corey Lopez (JR/Warsaw, Ind.) are just great players,” said IWU coach Joe Schulman. “They are special players. They are difficult to stop. When they are rolling together its formidable because you can’t key on just one of them, or two of them. And now we are starting to get other guys rising up around them. We need those guys dialed in and everyone else rising up around them and contributing as well.”
Taylor Lehman (JR/Indianapolis, Ind.) rose up today and scored the game-winning goal late in the first half. Derek Williams (FR/Rockford, Mich.) took the initial shot that the Huntington keeper made the save on but Lehman was there for the rebound for the 1-0 Wildcat lead in the 43rd minute.
Indiana Wesleyan then scored four times in the second half to win going away. Lopez and Martin scored goals three minutes apart in the 50th and 53rd minutes to give Indiana Wesleyan an insurmountable 3-0 advantage.
Martin added his second goal of the night in the 63rd minute and Pablo Montes (FR/Madrid, Spain) scored his first collegiate goal in the 84th minute to secure the 5-0 victory. Albert assisted on the final three scores.
“We’ve come out with a lot of fire in the second half of games and it has served us well,” continued Schulman. “But we will try to put that in a bottle and unleash it in the first half. We don’t want to become a second half team but it’s nice to come out in the second half and open up the game.”
Indiana Wesleyan outshot Huntington 19-3 on the evening. IWU put 10 shots on goal while Huntington was unable to put one on target. IWU keeper Josh Goepper (JR/Shelby Township, Mich.) earned the win as he saw 77:39 of action and earned a combined shutout with Andrew Wick (FR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) who played the final 12:21 of the match.
Indiana Wesleyan will play their final regular season road contest at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as IWU play at Spring Arbor (Mich.). An Indiana Wesleyan win on Wednesday would secure at least a share of the Crossroads League regular season championship.
“Spring Arbor is always a great game for us. It will be fun to go up there and play on the turf. It’s a faster surface and they are confident at home in their environment. But I think we will be ready for them. It’ll be a battle for sure.”
