Box Score MARION, Ind. -- No. 5-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball dominated play tonight as they defeated Crossroads League foe Goshen (Ind.) by an 89-64 margin in Luckey Arena.
The game marks the halfway point of the Crossroads League season. Indiana Wesleyan is second place in the standings at 8-1 while No. 1-ranked Saint Francis (Ind.) holds on to first place at 9-0. USF defeated Huntington (Ind.) in overtime tonight to hold the top spot by themselves.
Indiana Wesleyan moves to 18-3 overall on the season and has won nine consecutive outings. IWU has not lost since a three-game losing streak in early December. Including tonight’s big win, eight of the nine victories have been by 14 or more points.
“Our offensive stuff was much improved,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Steve Brooks. “When we score 89 points it’s a good game for us. We got a lot of contributions from a lot of places. When we attack the basket it opens things up and today we attacked the basket and finished. We got really good play from Katrina and Emma and Taylor. There were some opportunities there that we took advantage of. Hopefully we can do that in the future as well.”
Indiana Wesleyan (18-3) shot 50.0-percent from the floor tonight and featured four Wildcats in double figures. IWU had 14 players score in the victory.
Taylor Goshert scored a game-high 15 points and pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year. Val Sohasky added 13 points, Katrina Blackmon chipped in 11 points and 5 rebounds, and Emma Stahl ended with 10 points. Erika Isham added nine points while Teneil Krebs and Tori Kraft each scored seven.
IWU committed just nine turnovers on the evening. The nine turnovers are tied for the second lowest total of the season.
“I’m pleased with our turnovers for sure,” said Brooks. “I thought we made some improvement that way and made some good decisions that led to easy baskets.”
Sohasky drained a pair of free throws two and a half minutes into the game for a 6-5 Wildcat advantage as the Wildcats led the rest of the way. IWU went on a 9-1 run to close the half for a 46-25 lead at intermission. The Wildcats scored 10 of the first 11 points of the second half to extend their run to 19-2 for a 56-26 lead. The lead grew to as many as 33 points midway through the second half.
“We handled the ball extremely well and I thought we attacked the basket at the right times and got out and ran the ball to make some opportunities,” added Brooks. “I think there were a lot of positives from the game and a lot of people were able to get experience for down the road.”
Indiana Wesleyan remains at home in Luckey Arena for their next contest which will be against Bethel (Ind.). Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
