Aggressiveness Keys Men?s Basketball in Rout of Spring Arbor

Box Score

MARION, Ind. -- Luckey Arena was rocking early and often on Saturday afternoon as No. 13-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball came to play in a 92-61 landslide victory over visiting Spring Arbor (Mich.).

“This was our most complete game of the season,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Greg Tonagel. “We were aggressive on the offensive end and we were also aggressive on the defensive end. Our guys are playing aggressive right now. It’s all mentality.”

Before the first half was even halfway over, Indiana Wesleyan had built a 20 point cushion at 28-8. Six Wildcats scored in the stretch, including all five starters. Both RJ Mahurin and Lane Mahurin had eight points which included a monstrous slam by RJ.

“You point to a guy in the stat sheet and I will say he played aggressively,” continued Tonagel. “Anybody that entered the game today played aggressively. Whether it was Lane Mahurin getting six offensive rebounds in the first half, whether it was RJ and the attack he had on the rim for the dunk that really spurred us on, whether it was DJ shooting 10 3-pointers. Everybody who stepped on the floor played aggressively in their role.”

Indiana Wesleyan (16-4, 6-2 CL) led by as many as 26 points in the first half and a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer would have doubled up Spring Arbor by 27 points. But IWU was happy enough with a 51-27 lead at the break.

DJ Bettinger opened the second half scoring with a 3-pointer for that 27 point lead. The IWU advantage remained between 27 and the game-high lead of 33 points until 7:47 remained. After consecutive baskets by SAU’s Rob Hogans made it 77-53, IWU responded with another 3-pointer by Bettinger. The lead would be greater than 26 the rest of the day.

All five Wildcat starters finished with double digit points. Lane Mahurin led the team with 16 points, Bettinger added 15, Jordan Weidner scored 14, Zac Vandewater chipped in 13, and RJ Mahurin scored 12 points. Two more Wildcats just missed double digits as Bob Peters scored nine points and Eric Readman finished with eight.

Lane Mahurin earned his first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Bettinger hit 5-of-10 from beyond the arc while Vandewater had 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. RJ Mahurin ended the game with 8 rebounds in 20 minutes while Weidner tallied a game-high 5 assists.

Spring Arbor (9-11, 4-4 CL) was led by Hogans with 25 points. Hogans entered play today averaging  24.5 points per game which is tops in the Crossroads League and seventh in NAIA Division II.

Indiana Wesleyan has now won four in a row and will be away from Luckey Arena for their next two games. IWU travels to Goshen (Ind.) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and then face No. 15 Bethel (Ind.) on Saturday in Mishawaka.
