Box Score SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- Points were at a premium on Saturday afternoon as No. 5-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball traveled to Spring Arbor (Mich.) and left with a 50-36 victory in Crossroads League action.
The Wildcats held the Cougars to just 29.2-percent (14 of 48) shooting and 7.1-percent (1 of 14) from 3-point range. The Cougars committed 22 turnovers
There were four lead changes in the opening six minutes when IWU junior Val Sohasky hit one free throw for an 8-6 advantage with 13:40 remaining in the first half. Neither team scored for three and a half minutes until IWU freshman Chelsea Winner hit a bucket with 10:07 left in the half.
Spring Arbor (9-10, 3-5 CL) closed the deficit to three points at 19-16 with 4:29 left before halftime. Indiana Wesleyan scored 9 of the final 10 points in the half for a 28-17 cushion.
The Cougars scored the first three points of the second half to close within eight points. From that point, the Wildcats scored 13 unanswered for a 41-20 lead. The Cougars did not score during the run for nearly six minutes.
Spring Arbor responded with a 14-2 run to narrow the gap to single digits at 43-34 and 5:18 remaining on the clock. But SAU could get no closer than nine points as IWU pulled out the 50-36 victory.
Indiana Wesleyan (17-3, 7-1 CL) struggled offensively today as the team shot 35.3-percent (18 of 51) from the floor. IWU turned the ball over 23 times and hit only 3-of-11 (27.3-percent) from 3-point range.
IWU was led in scoring by Katrina Blackmon with 11 points. Blackmon contributed five rebounds and five assists. Val Sohasky was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Sohasky added a team-high eight rebounds.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to Luckey Arena for a pair of home games next week. IWU wraps up the first round of Crossroads League games on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. vs. Goshen (Ind.) and then will host Bethel (Ind.) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
