MARION, Ind. -- Grace (Ind.) handed the Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis team their first Crossroads League loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Sutter Tennis Center.
The match featured the top two teams from the 2012-13 season. Indiana Wesleyan and Grace tied for the Crossroads League regular season championship with 7-1 records. Grace improves to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in league play while Indiana Wesleyan drops to 3-2 and 2-1 in league action.
Gavin White gained the only point for Indiana Wesleyan in the No. 4-singles contest. He won by a 6-0, 6-1 score. Two other Wildcats lost singles matches in three sets. Kyle Johnson lost a hard fought 3-6, 7-6, 7-10 decision in the No. 1 competition while Leonard Matthews dropped a 6-1, 4-6, 6-7 contest at No. 4-singles.
The Lancers won the other three singles matches in very close straight set decisions. Brandon Dubuque lost 5-7, 4-6 in the No. 2 battle, Daniel Smith was defeated 6-7, 6-7 in No. 5-singles, and Adam Wroughton lost 6-7, 2-6 in the No. 6 contest.
Indiana Wesleyan opened the day with three losses in doubles. The No. 2-doubles team of Mathews and White and the No. 3 duo of Wroughton and Kamen Tabor both lost by 8-6 scores. The No. 1-tandem of Johnson and Dubuque fell 8-2.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when the Wildcats travel to Huntington (Ind.).
