MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis suffered its first loss of the season by a 6-3 margin on Tuesday in a non-conference tilt with Northwestern Ohio at the Sutter Tennis Center. The loss moves the Wildcats to 3-1 this season while the Races remain perfect at 3-0.
Northwestern Ohio jumped out to an early lead with two wins in doubles. Leonard Mathews and Gavin White earned the only win in doubles for Indiana Wesleyan in the No. 2 match by an 8-6 score. Kyle Johnson and Brandon Dubuque fell 9-8 (10-8) in the top position while Alex Wroughton and Alex Hornett lost 8-1 in No. 3-doubles.
Indiana Wesleyan was unable to make up the difference in singles matches as IWU won twice. Dubuque captured the point in No. 2-singles 6-3, 7-6 while Mathews won No. 3-singles by a margin of 6-1, 6-3. White was leading 6-4, 6-6 in No. 4 play before he had to retire due to injury. Johnson lost a close 7-6, 6-3 decision in the No. 1 spot, Daniel Smith dropped a 6-0, 6-2 match in No. 5 action, and Wroughton lost 6-1, 6-0 in No. 6-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to Crossroads League action their next time out at 11 a.m. on Saturday. IWU hosts Grace (Ind.) at the Sutter Tennis Center.
