Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University was a mere 62 seconds away of pulling out a dominating victory over Huntington (Ind.) on Friday night at Wildcat Field. But a late own goal tied the match 2-2 and that is how it would end.
Indiana Wesleyan fouled in the corner which allowed Huntington to set up a set piece. The kick found its way in front of the IWU net and the ball would deflect off an Indiana Wesleyan defender and into the goal for the game-tying score with 1:02 left in the second half.
It was difficult to see for the Wildcats after controlling play the entire match. The Wildcats outshot the Forester 23-4 on the night and had a 19-2 advantage during regulation. IWU put 10 shots on goal in the 110 minutes of action while the Foresters managed just two.
“It was disappointing,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Mark Castro. “We created 23 shots but only scored on two of them. They took four shots and were able to score two. It is a very disappointing result but I give credit to Huntington. They battled and got a point and are happy with it.”
Indiana Wesleyan struck first with a Corey Lopez goal in the 21st minute. Geoff Bowman was credited with the assist after his initial shot was saved by the keeper but Lopez followed with the put back goal.
Huntington answered in the 33rd minute as Isaac Wust tied the score 1-1. The goal was the first shot for Huntington on the night and the first goal that Indiana Wesleyan has allowed in Crossroads League play. IWU had shutout its first three opponents.
Indiana Wesleyan responded three minutes later as Bowman rifled a shot past the keeper in the 37th minute. Johnny Fredericks picked up the assist as IWU took a 2-1 lead into half as they outshot Huntington 11-2 in the period.
“If we want to have high hopes of a long postseason we have some work to do,” said Castro. “It’s not our talent because our talent is there. We have to give a 90 minute performance that creates scoring opportunities and we have to defend as well.”
The Wildcats are now 7-2-2 overall this season and 2-0-2 in league play. The Foresters are 5-5-1 and 1-1-1 in Crossroads League matches.
Indiana Wesleyan will have that opportunity to respond to Castro at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
