Box Score WINONA LAKE, Ind. -- Contrasting styles took center stage on Wednesday as No. 18-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University traveled to Winona Lake, Indiana to play Grace (Ind.) in the Tourbeau Men’s Soccer National Game of the Week which was broadcasted on NSCAA TV.
Indiana Wesleyan has made a name this season from the defensive end while Grace enters with a prolific scoring attack. Indiana Wesleyan would win the battle as neither team could score in a 0-0 draw through double overtime.
The Wildcats entered the contest second in the NAIA with five shutouts and sophomore keeper Josh Goepper ranks 10th nationally with 0.55 goals against. The Lancers, on the other side, are fourth in the NAIA with 4.29 goals per match and second in shots and shots on goal per match.
“Defensively we were pretty good,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Mark Castro. “Josh Goepper was rock solid in goal while Tyrone Martin and Dylan Bronkema were good and Josh Schultz came off the bench and gave us some really good minutes and locked things down in the back.”
Schultz played so well in the back that Castro moved Martin forward in overtime to try and create some scoring opportunities and seize three points. It nearly worked as in the final 10 seconds of the second overtime Martin zinged a shot that hit off the crossbar. Geoff Bowman then took a shot that the Grace keeper needed to make a nice save on as the buzzer sounded to preserve the 0-0 score.
“It wasn’t our best performance at all,” continued Castro. “We were actually disappointed with our performance because we wanted to come into this game and get three points and stay at the top. Instead we walked off the field with one point which is good enough but we hope it doesn’t haunt us later on.”
The Wildcats are still at the top of the Crossroads League standings with a 2-0-1 record for seven points while the Lancers follow with four points as they are 1-0-1.
“It was a pretty hard fought game on both sides,” said Castro. “The goalkeepers on both sides were pretty good today in what turned out to be a very physical game.”
Indiana Wesleyan returns to Wildcat Field for their next match with at 7 p.m. on Saturday against Huntington (Ind.). Huntington defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene 3-2 today and are 5-5-0 overall and 1-1-0 in league play.
