Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Saint Francis (Ind.) was frustrated all evening long by the robust Indiana Wesleyan University defensive effort on Saturday night at Wildcat Field.
The Wildcat defense kept the Cougars at bay all night long in a 2-0 win. The defense limited the Cougars (6-3-1, 0-1-0 CL) to a single shot which came late in the match in the 88th minute.
“Defensively, we did what we needed to do,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Mark Castro. “We shut down their two guys who are a big part of Saint Francis’ attack. Dylan Bronkema, Tyrone Martin and Kyle Beimers did a really great job of neutralizing those two players for them.”
Indiana Wesleyan (7-2-0, 2-0-0 CL) also had a lot of production on the offensive third of the field as the Wildcats peppered 12 shots with six of them being on goal. IWU had five shots in the opening half but upped that number to seven in the final 45 minutes.
Corey Lopez scored a classy goal which would wind up as the game-winner in the first half. Sam Kane directed a pass right in front of the net that Lopez hit with a side volley past the USF keeper for the 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
Indiana Wesleyan would receive an insurance goal in the 67th minute. Keaton Albert fed Geoff Bowman on the right side of the box and Bowman would launch a shot to the short side just inside the post for the 2-0 lead.
“We had a couple of really nice goals tonight,” said Castro. “Corey’s goal was great and one for the highlight reel and Geoff’s was really good too.”
Indiana Wesleyan will take to the road for their next league match at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Grace (Ind.) in Winona Lake, Indiana.
