MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis breezed by Cedarville (Ohio) University 8-1 on Friday in the NCCAA Midwest Regional Final held at the Sutter Tennis Center in Marion.
The tournament victory for the Wildcats secures an automatic bid to the NCCAA National Championships. The tournament will be held May 6-10 in Mobile, Alabama, a week before IWU will play in the NAIA National Tournament in the same location.
The only hiccup for Indiana Wesleyan on Friday came in a doubles match. Rachael Heiniger and Kristen Futrell lost 8-5 in No. 3 play for the only Cedarville point. Andrea Meyering and Lauren Wilson won 8-2 in No. 1-doubles while Katie Wilson and Kim Mella took an 8-3 win in No. 2-doubles for the early 2-1 advantage.
Indiana Wesleyan did not lose a set in any of the six singles matches. Heiniger won 7-6, 6-2 in No. 1-singles, Katie Wilson was victorious 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2, and Meyering earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3-singles. Lauren Wilson captured a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4, Futrell produced a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5-singles, and Mella won 6-3, 6-3 in No. 6 play.
The victory moves Indiana Wesleyan to 22-1 this year and 7-1 during the spring portion of the schedule. IWU now awaits their seeding and opponents for the NCCAA National Tournament.
