LIMA, Ohio -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis rebounded from their first loss of the season to slip past host University of Northwestern Ohio 5-4 on Monday in Lima, Ohio.
The Wildcats sped past the Races early with a 3-0 sweep in doubles matches. But the Races closed the gap with four wins in singles play but ultimately fell short 5-4.
Andrea Meyering and Lauren Wilson won No. 1-doubles 8-3 while Katie Wilson and Kim Mella earned an 8-5 victory in No. 2 play. Rachael Heiniger and Kristen Futrell finished the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win in No. 3 competition.
The Wilson sisters managed to win the only two singles matches for the Wildcats. Katie won No. 2-play by a 6-4, 6-1 score while Lauren took a 6-0, 6-2 mark in No. 4-singles.
Losing in singles matches were Heiniger (2-6, 6-3, 8-10) at the top spot, Meyering (4-6, 6-1, 8-10) in No. 3-singles, Futrell (3-6, 2-6) at No. 5 play, and Mella (4-6, 4-6) in the No. 6 position.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 19-1 this season with a 4-1 record during the spring schedule. IWU will return to the courts this weekend at the Wildcats host the annual Mark Richards Classic. Indiana Wesleyan plays Taylor (Ind.) University at 4 p.m. on Friday and then play Saturday against IU Southeast and IU East.
