MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis team had a successful start to their spring season with a 5-3 victory over Indiana Tech on Thursday at the Sutter Tennis Center.
The match opened with two wins for the Wildcats in doubles competition. The No. 1 team of Kyle Johnson and Daniel Stoddard won 8-4 while the No. 2 team of Leonard Mathews and Brandon Dubuque cruised to an 8-0 victory. Alex Hornett and Brooks Ayers lost 8-6 in the No. 3 competition.
Indiana Tech was able to make the match interesting with wins in the top two single spots. Johnson lost the No. 1 battle 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 and Mathews dropped the No. 2 match 6-7, 4-6. But Indiana Wesleyan won three of the bottom four spots to clinch the team victory.
Dubuque won 6-2, 6-2 in No. 3-singles, Stoddard earned the point in No. 4-singles 6-4, 6-2, and Smith was successful 6-0, 6-3 in No. 6-singles. The No. 5-singles match was not played.
Indiana Wesleyan is now 14-2 on the season and 1-0 during the spring schedule. IWU returns to action at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Grand Rapids, Michigan versus Davenport (Mich.) University.
