Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Chrissy Hooks sank a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining to give No. 15 Bethel (Ind.) College a 50-48 upset victory over No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball on Saturday in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan (26-2, 14-2 CL) overcame a 10-point deficit in the first half and led by as many as four points late. IWU freshman guard Jessica Stewart scored on a layup off a Bethel turnover to put Indiana Wesleyan up 44-40 with 7:51 remaining.
Senior guard Claire Ray later hit both her free throw attempts with 36 seconds left on the clock to put the Wildcats up 48-45. On the ensuing Pilot possession, Laura Johnson was fouled by senior forward Paige Smith. Johnson hit both free throws to narrow the gap to 48-47.
Bethel (22-6, 12-4 CL) was forced to foul and send Indiana Wesleyan to the free throw line. IWU missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity to give Bethel the opening. Hooks hit the winning shot with four seconds to play and give Bethel the home victory.
Smith finished the afternoon with a double-double as she scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds. Ray was the only other Wildcat in double figures as she added 10 points along with four assists. Junior guard Taylor Goshert contributed eight points and nine boards while sophomore forward Katrina Blackmon chipped in seven.
Indiana Wesleyan struggled mightily offensively on Saturday. IWU shot just 30.0-percent (15 of 50) from the field and 11.1-percent (2 of 18) from beyond the arc. At the foul line, Indiana Wesleyan shot at a 69.6-percent (16 of 23) clip.
Bethel was also limited offensively as well with a 34.0-percent (18 of 53) shooting night and 23.1-percent (6 of 26) from deep. BC went to the line 14 less times than Indiana Wesleyan, but did hit 8-of-9 (88.9-percent).
Indiana Wesleyan returns to Luckey Arena on Wednesday night for their final regular season home game of 2012-13. IWU hosts Grant County rival Taylor (Ind.) University at 7 p.m.
