Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Not to many times in basketball can a team earn two victories in one day but that happened to No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball today in the final day of the regular season.
First, Indiana Wesleyan traveled to Goshen (Ind.) College and cruised to a 79-54 victory. The win clinched the Crossroads League regular season championship but an hour later learned it will be shared with University of Saint Francis (Ind.). Saint Francis defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University to end the league season 16-2 and tied with Indiana Wesleyan. The regular season championship is the fourth straight for the Wildcats.
Since Indiana Wesleyan and Saint Francis each beat each other on their home courts this year, the next tie breaker begins with records against the other league members, starting at the top. Both teams lost to third place Bethel (Ind.) College so the final tie-breaker was a coin flip. Indiana Wesleyan produced its second victory on Saturday via the coin flip to earn the No. 1 seed in the Crossroads League Tournament and the league's first automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament.
Indiana Wesleyan will host No. 8-seed Mount Vernon Nazarene in the Crossroads League Tournament First Round at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Luckey Arena. IWU swept the season series with the Cougars.
On Saturday, Indiana Wesleyan scored the first nine points of the game and 22 of the first 26 for an 18 point lead at the midway point of the first half. The largest lead of the half was 27 when Abby Reinke scored off a turnover with 2:30 remaining for a 42-15 lead. Indiana Wesleyan went into halftime up 46-24.
Second half action saw the lead grow to a game high 31 points when senior forward Paige Smith scored with 11 plus minutes remaining for a 63-32 advantage. The lead never fell below 21 points the rest of the way.
A total of 14 Wildcats played and 13 of them scored and saw at least seven minutes of action. Smith led all players with 15 points while senior guard Claire Ray added 12 points, which all came in the first half, and junior guard Taylor Goshert earned 10 points.
The Wildcats shot 49.2-percent (29 of 59) and committed just six turnovers. Goshen shot 40.5-percent (17-of-42) and turned the ball over 20 times.
