Box Score MARION, Ind. -- No. 2 Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball thoroughly dominated No. 23 Huntington (Ind.) University 82-44 on Wednesday night in Luckey Arena.
The Wildcats opened the game on a 16-2 run and shot a blistering 60.4-percent (23 of 53) from the floor to dominate the top-25 showdown. IWU also shot 64.3-percent (9 of 14) from 3-point range and controlled the boards by a 42-24 margin.
Indiana Wesleyan (16-0, 4-0 CL) received a pair of 20 point efforts tonight from senior forward Paige Smith and junior guard Taylor Goshert. Smith led all players with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting and added seven rebounds and three assists. Goshert scored a career-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting and was 4-of-5 from deep. Goshert added six boards and did all her damage in less than 21 minutes.
The Wildcats raced out to a 16-2 run in the game's first five and a half minutes. Goshert scored seven of her points during the run.
Huntington (10-5, 2-2 CL) struggled all night shooting and fell by behind double digits in the first four minutes. Their first basket cut the deficit to 4-2 but they would not score another field goal for seven minutes. By that time, Indiana Wesleyan led 19-6.
With 5:10 left in the opening half, Forester senior guard Allison Greene scored to bring the score to 30-16. But the Wildcats went on a 14-0 run before a Forester basket just before half put IWU up 44-18 at intermission.
Indiana Wesleyan continued to run right by Huntington in the second half of play. IWU claimed its first 40 point cushion at 66-26 when Smith scored in the paint with 12:17 remaining. A 3-pointer by freshman guard Jessica Stewart pushed the Indiana Wesleyan lead to its highest of the night at 43 (76-33) with more than six minutes left.
Senior guard Claire Ray contributed nine points, seven rebounds, and six assists while sophomore guard Emma Stahl chipped in four points, five rebounds, and five assists. Sophomore guard Teneil Krebs added seven points and five rebounds off the bench and Stewart finished with six points.
The Wildcat offense doled out 20 assists and has earned 20 or more assists in three of their last four games. The Foresters, who were ranked in the top-25 in the country in assist/turnover ratio at 0.94, finished with seven assists to 13 turnovers.
Huntington was limited to 30.9-percent (17 of 55) shooting and shot just 50.0-percent (6 of 12) from the foul line. Huntington is the top team in the nation at the free throw line this season, hitting 79.4-percent from the line.
Indiana Wesleyan will take to the road in their next game which will be at Spring Arbor (Mich.) University on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
