Box Score MARION, Ind. -- It was a clash of style on Saturday afternoon when No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball defeated No. 15 Bethel (Ind.) College 60-42 in Luckey Arena.
The top-rated Indiana Wesleyan defense forced their will on high-octane Bethel. No team has scored more than 52 points against Indiana Wesleyan over the past 10 games and Bethel was no exception. Bethel entered play as the 23rd highest scoring team in NAIA Division II at 74.1 points per game.
"This was a quality, quality team in Bethel," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Steve Brooks. "They are a proficient shooting 3-point team. That was one of the things we knew we were going to have to limit and we were able to do that."
Bethel (16-4, 6-2 CL) entered play today as the No. 3-ranked team in 3-Point Field Goals Made and No. 5 at 3-Point Field Goals Made per Game at 9.2. The Indiana Wesleyan defense forced Bethel to change their approach as they took a season low 11 attempts from beyond the arc. Bethel finished with just three 3-pointers made for a 27.3 shooting percentage.
Indiana Wesleyan (20-0, 8-0 CL) did not allow a single Pilot to score in double figures. Bethel senior guard Laura Johnson -- the reigning NAIA DII National Player of the Week -- was held to two first half points and nine points overall with a single 3-pointer made. Johnson ranks fifth in the country scoring 20.7 points per game and leads the nation with 66 3-pointers.
"I thought Claire (Ray) did an outstanding job on Johnson," said Brooks. "She's a hard kid to guard and has added some stuff to her game from a year ago. I thought our kids did a really good job limiting her."
The first 12 minutes of the game featured four ties and seven lead changes. The last tie came on a Bethel basket by senior forward Baysia Cox for a 13-13 score. The next Indiana Wesleyan possession witnessed a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Teneil Krebs to give IWU a 16-13 lead. Indiana Wesleyan would not trail again. Krebs finished with a career-high 14 points and was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
The Krebs bucket ignited a 17-4 run for the Wildcats that took them into halftime with a 30-17 lead. The Pilots did not score a point over the final six minutes of the opening half.
The second half never saw the Indiana Wesleyan advantage at less than 12 points and no greater than 20 points. Two free throws by IWU junior guard Taylor Goshert gave the team their only 20 points cushion at 48-28 and 9:05 remaining.
Goshert had her best game in a Wildcat uniform as she earned her first career double-double. She had 14 points and tied for a game-high 10 rebounds. She was 4-of-8 from the field and 2-of-4 from 3-point range while hitting all four free throw attempts.
"Taylor is our energy kid," added Brooks. "She comes in there ready to compete. She had a tough game at Taylor but I'm really proud of the way she bounced back today. I just thought she did a great job. She has a nose for the ball and she hit some timely shots. She just competes and is a blessing for our team. Taylor shows up every day and gives it her best effort."
While Goshert and Krebs each scored 14 today, senior guard Claire Ray totaled a game-best 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting. She was 6-of-7 from the foul line, pulled down three boards, assisted on three baskets, and had three steals while playing all 40 minutes.
Indiana Wesleyan leading scorer senior forward Paige Smith was held to single digits for the first time this season with five points. But the senior came up big on the defensive end and contributed 10 rebounds. Junior forward Katrina Blackmon just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds along with four assists and three steals.
It does not get any easier for Indiana Wesleyan as their next game will be at No. 9-ranked University of Saint Francis (Ind.). The top-10 showdown will tip-off at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
