MARION, Ind. -- The final match of the Crossroads League regular season pitted the last two unbeaten teams in Indiana Wesleyan University and Marian (Ind.) University.
The winner of the match would win the Crossroads League regular season championship and the No. 1-seed in the upcoming Crossroads League Tournament. The match was played Thursday following two consecutive days of the match being postponed due to rain and concluded with an Indiana Wesleyan 7-2 victory.
Indiana Wesleyan would quickly take a 2-1 lead after doubles competitions. Lauren Wilson and Andrea Meyering earned an 8-2 win in No. 1-doubles while Katie Wilson and Kim Mella won 8-6 in No. 2-doubles. Rachael Heiniger and Kristen Futrell lost 5-8 in No. 3-doubles.
The Wildcats needed just three points in singles play to earn the team victory. IWU would win five of the six singles contests.
Heiniger (6-3, 6-3) won No. 1-singles, Meyering (2-6, 7-5, 6-2) earned the No. 2-singles victory, Lauren Wilson (6-3, 1-6, 7-5) claimed a point in No. 3-singles, Futrell (7-6, 6-4) won in straight sets in No. 4-singles, and Mella (1-6, 6-4, 6-3) won the No. 5-singles match. Sarah Richert dropped a 1-6, 4-6 in No. 6-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan has won 21 consecutive regular season championships dating back to 1992.
The Wildcats will host Cedarville (Ohio) University tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at the Sutter Tennis Center. That match will conclude the regular season as IWU opens the Crossroads League Tournament on Tuesday, October 2 against No. 8-seed Huntington (Ind.) University.
