MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men's tennis suffered its first defeat of the season on Monday in a 5-4 loss to Spring Arbor (Mich.) University at Sutter Tennis Center.
Indiana Wesleyan (9-1) had a chance to clinch a share of the Crossroads League regular season championship with a victory but now IWU will need to win the league finale to do so. Indiana Wesleyan, Marian (Ind.) University, and Grace (Ind.) College all have one loss in league play. Indiana Wesleyan travels to Marian on Wednesday in the league finale for both teams while Grace has two matches still remaining.
A Wildcat win on Wednesday would clinch the top-seed in the league tournament as in that scenario only Grace could tie IWU with one loss. The Wildcats hold the tie-breaker with the head-to-head victory.
Doubles matches were tightly contested on Monday with Spring Arbor taking two of three. Daniel Stoddard and Brooks Ayers won No. 3-doubles 9-8 for the lone point. Kyle Johnson and Alex McMahan dropped an 8-5 decision in No. 1-doubles while Leonard Mathews and Brandon Dubuque lost a tight 9-8 contest in No. 2-doubles.
Indiana Wesleyan and Spring Arbor split the six singles matches. Indiana Wesleyan collected victories by Johnson (6-1, 3-6, 6-2) in No. 1-singles, Stoddard (6-3, 7-6) in No. 5-singles, and Ayers (7-5, 6-4) in No. 6-singles.
Mathews (1-6, 3-6) lost in No. 2-singles, Dubuque (3-6, 2-6) fell in No. 3-singles, and McMahan (5-7, 3-6) was defeated in No. 4-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan and Marian will battle at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Indianapolis, Indiana. The winner of the match will clinch at least a share of the Crossroads League regular season championship.
