Box Score MARION, Ind. -- No. 11-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University hosted a Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) team this evening that was 4-0 in Crossroads League play and was fresh off a 3-1 victory against Grace (Ind.) on Wednesday.
But the Wildcats would dominate play Friday night and give the Cougars their first blemish of the season in league play in a 3-0 victory. IWU won by scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-16.
"We were going to do or die tonight," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Candace Moats. "We threw something out there very different and didn't tell them until pregame."
Indiana Wesleyan went with a new look to counter some lineup changes. IWU has recently lost two players due to family issues and injury.
"When the culture changes on your team you have to change with it so that always makes you look for things that can inspire you or change to make it better," continued Moats. "When our culture changes we have to change with it and make adjustments and when we do that and everybody buys in, we're doing a good thing."
It also helps having the continued great play from junior middle hitter Kristine Egebrecht. The West Chicago, Illinois native again led all players with 13 kills and a .650 kill percentage.
"She's just killing it," Moats said of Egebrecht. "When you put one blocker on her these are the performances you should get. The setters just set her perfect tonight. She was up ready to go and there's no way somebody should stop her with just one blocker in the middle.
The two Indiana Wesleyan setters who kept feeding Egebrecht were senior Yui Iwase and freshman Katie Holler. Iwase assisted on 21 kills while Holler earned 13 assists and five digs.
Senior outside Rachel Quackenbush also contributed in a big way with nine kills and a .389 attack percentage. Junior outside hitter Rae Brandes added nine kills, nine digs, two aces, and block assists while junior opposite hitter Shelby Newberry finished with four kills and a solo block.
Indiana Wesleyan will look to carry momentum from Friday night into Saturday afternoon as No. 18-ranked Taylor (Ind.) comes to Luckey Arena.
"It's a huge match," said Moats. "Tonight is really going to give us great inspiration to go tomorrow and fight. We're going to keep the plan and see what we can do with it."
The match begins at 3 p.m. inside Luckey Arena. It is the first of two matches the teams will play this season with the next one coming on November 2 in Upland, Indiana.
