MARION, Ind. -- Leonard Matthews was the last Wildcat on the court and would win in three sets to give Indiana Wesleyan University men's tennis a huge 5-4 victory over visiting Huntington (Ind.) University.
With the score tied 4-4 and all the other singles matches completed in two sets, Matthews earned the decisive fifth point for the Wildcats. He won the No. 2-singles match by a score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 as the Wildcats remain unbeaten this season at 5-0.
Indiana Wesleyan and Huntington were tied atop the Crossroads League standings at 3-0 entering play on Tuesday. Indiana Wesleyan now remains the lone unbeaten in league play with a 4-0 mark while Huntington drops to 3-1.
The Wildcats fell behind early as Alex Hornett and Daniel Stoddard at No. 3-doubles was the only team to win in their match. The pair won 8-4 as the Foresters held the early 2-1 advantage. Kyle Johnson and Alex McMahan dropped No. 1-doubles play 8-2 while Brandon Dubuque and Matthews lost 9-8 in No. 2-doubles.
Indiana Wesleyan was forced to win at least four of the six singles matches to claim the team victory and that is exactly what IWU did. Dubuque won 6-3, 6-3 in No. 3-singles, Stoddard earned the point in No. 5-singles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory, and Hornett took a 6-3, 6-4 win in No. 6-singles. Those three wins combined with the Matthews victory secured the 5-4 Wildcat win.
Johnson lost 2-6, 3-6 in No. 1-singles while McMahan dropped a 2-6, 3-6 decision as well in No. 4-singles play.
Indiana Wesleyan will next play a non-league game on Wednesday at Cornerstone (Mich.) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The match begins at 3 p.m.
