MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men's tennis opened the 2012 Crossroads League schedule with a 6-3 victory over visiting Goshen (Ind.) College at the Sutter Tennis Center.
The Wildcats up their record to 2-0 during the season and 1-0 in league play.
Indiana Wesleyan opened the match with a sweep in doubles play. Sophomore Kyle Johnson and freshman Alex McMahan captured the No. 1-doubles point with an 8-2 victory. Freshmen Brandon Dubuque and Leonard Matthews followed suit with an 8-3 in in No. 2 competition while senior Brooks Ayers and Daniel Stoddard pulled out an 8-6 win in No. 3-doubles.
Indiana Wesleyan collected three wins in singles play with victories by Johnson in No. 1-singles (6-3, 6-2), Dubuque in No. 3-singles (6-1, 6-1), and McMahan in No. 4 play (6-1, 6-2). Matthews dropped a hard fought three set decision in No. 2-singles (6-2, 4-6, 4-10) as did Ayers in No. 5-singles (6-1, 6-7, 7-10). Ayers nearly pulled out the victory as he was leading 5-1 before cramps slowed down the senior. Stoddard could not finish play in No. 6-singles due to an illness he has battled all week.
IWU will remain in Marion for their next match which will be at on Saturday versus Bethel (Ind.) College.
