MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women's tennis team caped off a strong spring regular season with two 9-0 sweeps of IU-Southeast and Taylor (Ind.) University in the Mark Richards Classic.
In the Saturday morning match with IU-Southeast, the No. 1-doubles team of Andrea Meyering and Lauren Wilson defeated their opponents 8-0, while Rachael Heiniger and Kim Mella teamed up at No. 2-doubles for an 8-0 victory. Aubrey Lohser and Diane Jones completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory at the No. 3-doubles position.
Heading into singles play, the Wildcats were nearly flawless by taking six-of-six matches.
Heiniger cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1-singles, Meyering dominated at No. 2-singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory, and Lohser was victorious at No. 5-singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win. The rest of the matches were played in an eight game pro-set format, due to the rules of the tournament. Mella conquered her opponent at No. 3-singles 8-1, Sarah Richert won 8-2 at No. 4-singles, and Jones emerged with a win at 8-1 at No. 6-singles.
In the Saturday afternoon match with Taylor (Ind.) University match, the result was similar with the Wildcats ending up on top.
Meyering and Wilson won 8-3 at the No. 1-doubles position while Kristen Futrell and Heiniger held on for an 8-4 win at No. 2-doubles. Lohser and Jones teamed up at No. 3-doubles for the win with an 8-2 victory, completing the doubles sweep.
Again, IWU took six-of-six singles matches from their conference rivals in pretty quick fashion.
Heiniger was victorious at No.1-singles with a 6-2 6-2 win, Meyering swept her opponent at No. 2-singles 6-0, 6-0, and Richert was victorious at No. 6-singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Mella cruised to an 8-0 victory at the No. 5-position, Wilson won 8-2 at No. 3-singles, and Lohser finished the match with a victory in her last home match at IWU with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 8-2 in the spring and 22-2 overall. Finishing up their season, the Wildcats will compete in the NCCAA Nationals (May 8-11) and NAIA Nationals (May 15-17) in Mobile, Alabama.
