Softball Earns Friday Split at Cumberland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LEBANON, Tenn. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball gained a doubleheader split with a second game victory over host Cumberland (Tenn.) University on Friday in Lebanon, Tennessee.

Following a 12-5 loss in the opener, Indiana Wesleyan rebounded with a 4-3 victory in eight innings of play. The split moves Indiana Wesleyan to 4-2 on the season while Cumberland is now 5-3.

Highlighting the day for the Wildcats was third baseman Katie Smith. With the score tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth inning in game two, Smith stepped up to the plate and crushed the eventual game-winning 2-run home run. Cumberland did score one in the home half of the inning but that was not enough as the Wildcats won 4-3.

Indiana Wesleyan started the game with a run in the first but Cumberland answered with two in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 lead. Indiana Wesleyan tied the score at 2-2 with a run in the fifth before the Smith home run in the eighth inning.

Jessica Hull was stellar in the circle for Indiana Wesleyan. Hull pitched all eight innings and allowed three runs -- one earned -- on seven hits. She struck out six and did not walk a batter. The sophomore helped herself at the plate going 2-for-4 with a steal.

Centerfielder Tamara Davis continues her hot play to open the 2012 season. She was 3-of-4 from the dish with a run scored and two stolen bases. Smith was 1-for-3 with the home run, two runs scored, and two RBI. Second baseman Marissa French and leftfielder Gabby McIntire each went 1-for-3 while McIntire also scored a run.

The Wildcats did not fare as well in a 12-5 loss in the opener. IWU overcame a 5-1 hole after two innings to tie the score 5-5 in the top of the sixth. The Wildcats scored once in the third, once in the fifth, and then two more in the sixth to get back into the game. But right after tying the score in the sixth, Cumberland exploded for seven in the home half of the inning.

Smith hit her first of two home runs on the day and was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Davis was the only other Wildcat with two hits. She hit a double, scored a run, and knocked in another.

Starting pitcher Abbie Forman, first baseman Brittany Van Vliet, right fielder Sam Hemming, and left fielder Kelsey Decker all added one hit in the loss.

Forman was the pitcher of record for Indiana Wesleyan as she tossed a complete game. Forman allowed 12 runs, all earned, on 13 hits. She struck out eight in six innings of work.

Indiana Wesleyan will next play a doubleheader at St. Catharine's (Ky.) College. The first game will begin at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday in St. Catharine's, Kentucky.
