Box Score MARION, Ind. -- The boa constrictor defense was in full force Wednesday night as No. 1-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball stifled No. 21-ranked Huntington (Ind.) University all night long in a 62-30 thumping inside Luckey Arena.
Ed Thurman of ESPN 860 AM long ago termed the Wildcat defense as the boa constrictor for the way it suffocates opposing offenses and strangles them into submission. Tonight there was no better way to term Indiana Wesleyan on the defensive end.
Huntington (15-8, 7-6 MCC) was limited to 18.2-percent (6 of 33) shooting and was 0-for-7 from beyond the arc. Huntington made a single field goal in the second half and that came with 4:30 left on the clock.
"I thought our kids came out and had a real mindset to stop them," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Steve Brooks. "That is a multi-faceted offensive team that has a lot of kids that can score. We did a good job of taking their scorers out of the play."
The 30 points was the lowest opponent score of the season for Indiana Wesleyan by seven points. IWU last held a team to 30 points in a 44-30 victory at Malone (Ohio) University on November 17, 2007 and it was the lowest since a 68-28 win versus Daemen (N.Y.) College on November 10, 2007.
The Foresters entered the game with three players scoring in double digits and not a single Huntington player left with more than nine points. HU junior guard Pazia Speed, leading the Foresters with 12.4 points per game, was limited to just three points on 1-of-4 shooting.
Indiana Wesleyan (23-2, 12-1 MCC) forced Huntington into 23 turnovers on Wednesday as HU earned just two assists.
The Wildcats overwhelmed the Foresters early with 18 of the first 22 points in the game. The Foresters would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
"The first half we moved the ball well," added Brooks. "We got open looks. We were able to knock them down and I think that took the wind out of their sails a little bit. Second half we weren't as efficient offensively but still did some good things."
Indiana Wesleyan scored the final seven points of the first half and went into halftime leading 32-16.
Huntington was unable to bring the deficit any lower than the 16 point halftime lead. Midway through the half Indiana Wesleyan streaked to a 12-2 run to gain a 53-26 lead with more than five minutes left to play. The 32 point margin of victory was the largest lead of the contest.
The Wildcats were 45.8-percent (22 of 48) from the floor and 37.5-percent (9 of 24) from beyond the arc. IWU dished out 19 assists as a team and committed 17 turnovers.
Brooks said, "I don't want them to be complacent and timid. So I can live with some turnovers if they are going to play hard and compete."
Indiana Wesleyan did compete on Tuesday led by a pair of senior guards. Rachel Steinbarger scored a game-high 13 points and was 4-of-10 from the 3-point line. Ashley Brooks added nine points, three rebounds, and seven assists.
"Ashley had seven assists and two turnovers. She made some nice plays and created some stuff for people," said Brooks. "And a lot of people forget about (Rachel). She plays extremely hard every night. You know what you are going to get when Rachel takes the floor. I think people sometimes take her for granted. But I don't and her teammates do not."
Junior forward Paige Smith saw extended minutes and produced a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior center Krystal Stoneking added 10 points and junior guard Claire Freeman contributed seven points, six boards, and three assists.
Huntington was led by junior guard Lauren Meese with nine points senior forward Kelsey Green added four points and seven rebounds. Huntington as a team was 18-of-26 (69.2-percent) from the free throw line.
On a side note, co-No. 1-ranked Davenport (Mich.) University fell in overtime tonight to No. 6-ranked Concordia (Mich.) University. Concordia won 81-78.
Indiana Wesleyan will take to the road the next time out at Spring Arbor (Mich.) University on Saturday, February 4. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
