Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Spring Arbor (Mich.) University scored the golden goal on a penalty kick as Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer lost 2-1 in double overtime in the Crossroads League Tournament Championship at Wildcat Field.
With 2:02 remaining in the second overtime, Spring Arbor junior Joel Musambi broke into the box at an angle. As one Wildcat slipped, another was forced to come in from the side and he took down Musambi for the easy PK call by the official.
Sophomore Jeffery Addai took the penalty kick for Spring Arbor and shot to the left of Indiana Wesleyan freshman keeper Josh Goepper. Goepper had guessed right and the easy goal set off a massive Spring Arbor celebration.
The Wildcats were the tournament's No. 1-seed and the defeat is the first this season at Wildcat Field. Meanwhile, the Cougars earned the Crossroads League automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament.
Musambi scored the first goal of the match in the 13th minute. That 1-0 lead held until the 55th minute when junior Geoff Bowman crossed a pass over to senior Seth Douwsma. Initially, the SAU keeper looked to have made the save but the side official declared his momentum -- and the ball -- carried past the line and into the goal for a 1-1 tie.
The Wildcat held momentum for a large portion of the match. The Cougars held a 4-3 advantage in shots just shy of the midway point of the first half. From that point on, the Wildcats outshot the Cougars 11-4 and created many more scoring opportunities.
Indiana Wesleyan will now play in the NCCAA Midwest Regional Tournament. IWU will travel to Grace (Ind.) College on Wednesday in a semifinal match in Winona Lake, Indiana.
