GREENTOWN, Ind. -- Top-seed Indiana Wesleyan University had no problems in dispatching No. 8-seed Bethel (Ind.) College in the Crossroads League Tournament First Round today.
The Wildcats topped the Pilots 7-0 at the Howard County Indoor Tennis Complex due to rainy conditions on Tuesday. The match was stopped after seven matches due to limited courts indoors.
Indiana Wesleyan quickly showcase why they were the top seed as Bethel managed to win just two games in doubles play. Kyle Johnson and Alex McMahan at No. 1-doubles and the No. 2-doubles team of Brandon Dubuque and Leonard Mathews each won by identical 8-1 scores. Brooks Ayers and Daniel Stoddard did even better with an 8-0 victory in No. 3-doubles.
With four courts available inside at Greentown, Indiana Wesleyan would win all four as the match came to an early end. Johnson (6-0, 6-1) won No. 1-singles, Mathews (6-1, 6-1) earned the No. 2-singles victory, Dubuque (6-0, 6-1) managed an easy win at No. 3-singles, and McMahan (6-0, 6-0) did not drop a game in No. 4-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 13-1 this season and will next play in the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals. IWU will play the winner of No. 4-seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) University and No. 5-seed Huntington (Ind.) University on Thursday at the Sutter Tennis Center.
