INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --The Indiana Wesleyan University women's tennis team showed shear will and determination in their match on Saturday versus Marian (Ind.) University in Indianapolis, Indiana. 

 

After doubles play had finished the Wildcats were trailing 2-1 to the Knights, something that has never happened before in a conference match.

Andrea Meyering and Lauren Wilson fell 2-8 to their No. 1-doubles opponents from Marian, while Aubrey Lohser and Kim Mella were defeated 4-8 at the No. 3-doubles position. The lone doubles point for the Wildcats came from the No. 2-doubles team of Kristen Futrell and Rachael Heiniger as they battled for a 9-7 victory.

Going into singles play Indiana Wesleyan knew they needed to win at least four of six singles points to claim a victory.  Due to rain, the match was moved to a nearby indoor complex in which only three matches could be played at one time. 

Heiniger, Meyering, and Wilson were all sent on court first knowing at least two of them needed to win to take some of the pressure off of the next three matches to be put on. Heiniger cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1-singles, Wilson easily defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3-singles, and Meyering battled to win her match at No. 2-singles with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory. 

In winning all three matches the score stood at 4-2 in favor of IWU, who only needed one more singles match to seal the victory. 

Futrell, Sarah Richert, and Diane Jones were the next three matches to be played and the Wildcats would take two of three to complete the victory.  Futrell defeated her opponent at No. 4-singles 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 giving IWU the fifth point they needed. Diane Jones cushioned the win with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6-singles but Sarah Richert fell 2-6, 5-7 at No. 5-singles.

Indiana Wesleyan improves to 9-0 during the fall season and 7-0 in the Mid-Central College Conference.  The next match for the Wildcats will be at home at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 28th versus Goshen (Ind.) College.
