Box Score MARION, Ind. -- The bleachers were full and the sun was shining on Wildcat Field during the annual Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer match during Homecoming.
Unfortunately, Huntington (Ind.) University spoiled the celebration with a goal seven minutes into the second overtime to escape Marion with a 3-2 win.
"I thought we didn't play with enough heart today," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Mark Castro. "Huntington did what they needed to do by responding after we scored some goals."
The golden goal for the Foresters came off a corner kick set. The initial kick would find its way to the back post where Huntington sophomore Wes Johnson was waiting. His shot found the back of the net to send Huntington the conference win.
The charged up stands definitely benefitted the Wildcats early. Sophomore midfielder Geoff Bowman took a free kick outside the 18-yard box that initially the Forester keeper got his hands on. But he was unable to hold on as he hit the ground and senior forward Erik Johnson easily put the ball in for the first goal of the match in the fifth minute.
Huntington quickly responded with a goal in the ninth minute, but Indiana Wesleyan would grab the lead back before halftime. Sophomore forward Devin Randle scored to the back post in the 37th minute to give Indiana Wesleyan a 2-1 lead they would take into halftime.
"It was a nice score early from EJ (Erik Johnson) and Devin's goal was fantastic, left footed to the back post was a great strike," said Castro. "It was nice to get some goals early today."
The second half would not be as kind to the Wildcats. The Foresters forced a turnover which led to a goal by freshman forward Todd Canal just 48 seconds into the second half to tie the match 2-2.
Neither team would score again until the Johnson goal seven minutes into the second overtime period.
"It's pretty discouraging," continued Castro. "In the second half I thought we had plenty of opportunities. It's winning the ball in the midfield and going forward. We just didn't set someone else up for an easy goal. It was sloppy, just wasn't good enough."
Indiana Wesleyan outshot Huntington 23-6 and had double the amount of shots on goal, 8-4. IWU also earned nine corner kicks to just three for HU.
"We definitely want to thank all the fans, the Hodson Scotsmen, and the families for coming to support us," said Castro. "It was a tremendous day to have the stands packed like that cheering for us."
"Hopefully we can recover a little bit and gear up for a pretty important match with Mount Vernon on Tuesday."
Indiana Wesleyan will battle Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University for the first time ever in Mid-Central College Conference play on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The match will be in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
