Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. -- For the 10th consecutive season the Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball team has won 20 games.
No. 8-ranked Indiana Wesleyan earned the milestone victory on Wednesday night in a 66-53 victory at Goshen (Ind.) College. IWU is 20-3 this season and is tied for the Mid-Central College Conference lead with a 9-1 mark.
The Wildcats earned their 20th win of the year with another stellar defensive effort, limiting the Maple Leafs to 38.6-percent (17 of 44) shooting and 7.7-percent (1 of 13) from 3-point range. IWU also forced 20 turnovers and out-rebounded the Maple Leafs 32-21.
Indiana Wesleyan was led by senior forward Elaine Hessel with team-highs of 15 points and six rebounds. Junior center Krystal Stoneking added 14 points and sophomore forward Lyzz Smith finished with 10 points. Senior guard Kayla Thompson contributed nine points, four rebounds and four assists in the win.
Goshen jumped out to an early advantage and led 10-3 early. Eight straight points for Indiana Wesleyan gave IWU their first lead of the game at 11-10. With less than four minutes in the half, Indiana Wesleyan trailed 18-17, but IWU scored 10 of the last 15 points in the period to take a 28-22 halftime lead.
Five minutes into the second half, Stoneking sank a bucket to give the Wildcats their first double digit lead of the night at 35-24. But the maple Leafs drew within six points at 41-35 at the midway point of the second half.
Indiana Wesleyan responded with 14 straight points to quickly put the game out of reach at 55-35 as 5:11 remained on the clock.
Goshen was led in scoring by Erica Yost and Cassie Greives with 16 points apiece. Goshen is now 6-18 overall and 2-8 in the MCC.
The Wildcats remain on the road for their next game as they play Bethel (Ind.) College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 29 in Mishawka, Indiana.
