MARION, Ind. - The Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team earned their first win in the Mid-Central College Conference with a 2-0 shutout of Huntington (Ind.) University on Tuesday night at Wildcat Field.
Junior midfielder Zach Grantham opened the scoring for the Wildcats in the ninth minute with a header on a free kick from senior defender Mark Demchak. Grantham directed Demchack's line drive cross past the Forester goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
IWU would add to its lead in the 21st minute when senior forward Kyle Joern scored his first goal of the season. Senior midfielder Mitch Lobdell placed a corner kick to the far side of the penalty box to the waiting Joern, who volleyed it to the far post for the insurance goal.
Indiana Wesleyan held a huge advantage in shots 22-6, while also winning the battle of shots on goal 9-3.
The Wildcat defense would protect the lead for the rest of the game as freshman goalkeeper Dylan McCauley preserved the shutout with three saves on the evening.
"We came out with passion tonight," said junior defender Ross Tanzer. "We were tired of just talking and needed to put our talk into action. We are excited for the challenge of the rest of the season."
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 3-6-1 (1-1-0 MCC) while Huntington falls to 2-7-1 (0-1-1 MCC).
The Wildcats' next match will be on Wednesday, September 29 when IWU travels to Ft. Wayne to take on University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at 4:30 p.m.
