Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer failed to hold a 2-0 lead in the second half and finished with a 2-2 tie with visiting Asbury (Ky.) College on Friday night at Wildcat Field.
The Wildcats looked to have the match under control early with a pair of goals before the match was less than 10 minutes old.
Indiana Wesleyan senior midfielder Austin Bock started the match off with a bang. Following two near own goals by Asbury with a failed header by an Asbury defender that hit the crossbar and then the goalkeeper's attempted punch out hit the crossbar again, Bock header home the rebound score just 23 seconds in the contest for the 1-0 advantage.
Less than eight minutes later in the ninth minute, the Wildcats again found the back of the net. Senior midfielder Mitch Lobdell found a wide open Lucas Carpenter in front of the net for the goal and a 2-0 lead.
The Wildcats headed into intermission with the 2-0 lead, outshooting the Eagles 12-5.
Early in the second half, a failed pass attempt back to Indiana Wesleyan goalkeeper Nick Platt resulted in an own goal in the 50th minute as the lead was cut in half 2-1.
Asbury (0-4-1) hit the equalizer in the 85th minute when freshman midfielder Zach Welch beat Platt for the 2-2 tie. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie, sending the match into overtime.
Indiana Wesleyan pressured the Asbury defense the entire 20 minutes of overtime, but to no avail. IWU launched five shot during the extra time, with three on goal but Asbury goalkeeper Dylan Fouts made all the save.
For the match, Indiana Wesleyan outshot Asbury 24-12 and held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. Platt finished the night with four saves for IWU.
Indiana Wesleyan (2-4-1) returns to the pitch tomorrow night with a home match against Aquinas (Mich.) College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
